Change name of Long Island City to LIC, Say Officials, Business Leaders

According to the New York Post, in order to separate from the confusion of being mistaken with Long Island, officials and business leaders are looking to change the name of Long Island City to the “trendier “abbreviation “LIC.”

Maybe part of the reason it is confused with Long Island is because it is part of Long Island. It has been since “L.I.C.” was founded as an independent city in 1870.

Help @greenpointers Map Greenpoint

Right up my alley:

While we all love jumping on the poor guy who tries to annex McCarren Park for Williamsburg, the truth of the matter is that neighborhoods grow and contract like families and are based on common consensus rather than the legal boundaries that govern more exact areas such as congressional districts and zip codes. So, we’re going to hit you all up for a little consensus.

(P.S. – a little less than a third of McCarren Park is in Williamsburg.)

Lost Streets of Greenpoint

Kevin Walsh takes a close look at long-gone streets in Greenpoint. A bunch of these streets never existed other than on a map (certainly the little streets northwest of Commercial, and probably the streets between Manhattan Avenue and Whale Creek).

No explanation for the two Meseroles, though.

Don Draper Was NOT in Williamsburg

The heat must be getting to the Brooklyn Paper:

Yep, that was Don Draper taking in the summer breeze from one of the best places around — a Williamsburg stoop.

Technically, it was Jon Hamm, who was not filming for Mad Men. And the stoop was at 365 Grand Avenue (at Gates), which most Brooklynites know is not in Williamsburg (that would be Grand Street).

Don Draper, being a Manhattanite, probably wouldn’t know the difference. But you’d think the Brooklyn Paper would.
