From the Mini Mall to Metropolitan Avenue to Bushwick – 20 years of Williamsburg retail encapsulated.
First Rough Trade moves to Rockefeller Center, now Samesa?
Is Rockefeller Center trying to become the new Williamsburg?

Does “L-mageddon already has a prime span of Williamsburg’s Bedford Avenue in its grip”?
A lot of the examples shown around Bedford and North 7th have been vacant or under-rented for ages. Add to this the long-standing shittyness of this stretch of Bedford and the insanely high rents, and I’m a bit skeptical that this is all about the L train. But it sure doesn’t help.
(Special bonus for long-time Northside denizens – a cameo appearance by Kenn Firpo!)
Catching up on news from vacation – looks like the Salvation Army has found an offer they can’t refuse for the construction site (and long-rumored home of a future Apple Store) at the corner of Bedford and North 7th. Probably good news, as judging by the pace of construction, SA should not be in the construction management business.
Two mixed-use buildings (formerly occupied by Spike Hill) will be replaced by multi-floor mega retail. Bad news for residents and local business alike.
UPDATE: I originally misread this as just two buildings (the Spike Hill buildings). The sale also includes the Dunkin’ Donuts building as well as three small buildings on the next block south (original home of Earwax way back when). So even more bad news for local retail on Bedford Avenue.
Racked assumes that there will be an Apple store, but gets the owner of Kings’ old space to g on record that it won’t be there.
Commenter #2 (AndyG) stole my line.
After a good 15 years of rumors and fear mongering, is Starbucks finally coming to Williamsburg? If Eater is right, yes.
We’ll see, but for now, outlook good.
Dunkin’ Donuts is setting up shop in the old Northside Pharmacy space. Halina Jankowski, owner of Northside Pharmacy (which is now on Driggs) sums it all up pretty well: “I just expected something a little more fancy or original or hip.”
And this after years of living in fear of Starbucks.
According to Crain’s, Anthropologie is going to join Whole Foods (and possibly Joe Fresh, Citibank and New York Sports Club) next door to Duane Reade, HSBC and Retro Fitness, which I guess has the advantage of concentrating all the boring (and largely redundant) retail on one block.
But that’s not all… according to Crain’s Anthropologie’s corporate sibling Urban Outfitters is coming to North 6th Street, next door to American Apparel (another match made in heaven).
Meanwhile:
J. Crew has also been rumored to be looking in the neighborhood
Why do I get the feeling J. Crew is the new Apple Store?
